Statists usually defend against libertarians by saying: “the world is too complex, so we can’t accept the simple solution of cutting government and only having a few basic laws”. My reply: On the contrary, we need an extremely small government role precisely because we live in such a complex world. It is irrational for the statist to look at an immensely complex human system with many unknown and misunderstood mechanisms, and attempt to micromanage and control it. Libertarians don’t think that the world is simple, we think that the government coercion which disturbs the complex human interactions should be minimized. Let the complex mechanisms work out on their own with as little disturbance as possible.
