War Is the Health of the State

“War is the health of the state.” – Randolph Bourne.  Governments love war because it feeds their power. War gives an excellent opportunity to justify taking away liberty while hiding under patriotism and security. War unites people under the leader and overshadows previous divisions. It gets things moving. War also offers the illusion of stimulating the economy (but, it actually does not on a net basis). As Obama’s poll numbers are low, and he hasn’t been able to accomplish his goals during peacetime, more war in Iraq and Syria may be just what he needs.
